IN MEMORIAM
Community Action Partnership is saddened to announce the passing of Joan Cote, CCAP, long-time employee of Mid-Willamette Valley Community Action Agency in Salem, Oregon. She died with her husband in an accident in July.

Description: The Administration for Children & Families and the Dept. of Health & Human Services are more than the Community Services Block Grant and Low-Income Home Energy Assistance. OCS director Jeannie Chaffin and a select group of her federal colleagues will discuss opportunities for Community Action Agencies to connect to the Affordable Care Act, Fatherhood and Faith-Based programs, TANF, and others. This will be an interactive session that provides up-to-the-minute information that will benefit your program participants and our communities.

NEW WORKSHOP:  A TRANSFORMATION IN HUMAN SERVICES AND COLLABORATION, with Chris Napier, Social Solutions, Baltimore, MD. 8:30 - 10:00 am, Lincoln, 4th level.
Session Description: We are in the midst of a serious social and economic crisis in the U.S.  In response, we are pumping hundreds of billions of dollars into the nonprofit sector annually to improve the lives of those in need.  Yet we can’t seem to “move the needle” on many of our most pressing social issues.  This presentation will explore some of the reasons behind nonprofit ineffectiveness, key trends that are helping to spark a change in the status quo, and what you should be doing to succeed in this changing environment

  • Part 1: Overview of how to restructure an organization, eliminate redundancy, provide comprehensive customer focused service delivery with asset focused strategies to get people out of poverty.
  • Part 2: Overview of early education services that implement asset strategies and track child outcomes – evidence based and a center of excellence for Head Start.
  • Part 3: Overview of youth services that implement asset strategies and prepare youth for success and develop entrepreneurial attitudes.

NEW BIOS

Elba Montalvo
for CULTURALLY BASED CASE MANAGEMENT FOR LATINO/HISPANIC COMMUNITIES on Wednesday from 8:30 - 10:00 am, Clinton, 2nd level.
Elba Montalvo’s career has been dedicated to improving the lives of children. Starting as a teacher in the New York City public school system, and then working as Executive/Educational Director of a daycare center, Ms. Montalvo recognized the need for services and information directed to the Latino community and has worked at both the local and national level to address the challenges faced by Latino children and their families.  In New York she served as Director of the New York Council on Adoptable Children.  Nationally, Ms. Montalvo was invited by President Clinton in 1997 to be part of a White House National Conference on Child Care.

Melissa Levy, for RURAL AMERICA TASK FORCE DISCUSSION, 1:30 - 3:00 pm, Clinton, 2nd level.
Melissa Levy is a Senior Associate of Yellow Wood Associates, Inc., where she has worked since May 2003.  Yellow Wood is the managing grantee of the Ford Foundation’s Wealth Creation in Rural Communities initiative; as part of that work, Melissa currently coaches Southern value chain construction grantees on wealth creation and measurement and provides measurement and other technical assistance to Central Appalachian grantees.  Melissa is the co-author of a paper on community wealth indicators, Measuring Community Wealth.  Melissa’s other project work involves research and facilitation around various natural resource based rural economic development initiatives.

Stefanie Costello, for FINANCIAL EDUCATION AND ASSET BUILDING STRATEGIES FOR CHILDREN AND FAMILIES IN HEAD START, Monday, 3:30-5:00 pm, East, 4th level
Ms. Stefanie Costello currently works as an Assets for Independence (AFI) Resource Coordinator.  Among many assignments, Ms. Costello is the liaison for the Child Care Bureau and the Office of Head Start for the Financial Stability for Families with Young Children Initiative focusing on Early Childhood.  She also coordinates and promotes outreach surrounding refundable tax credits, EITC, and free tax preparation.  Ms. Costello provides technical assistance to AFI grantees in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland, Washington DC, Delaware, and Virginia. Ms. Costello, a native of Athens, Georgia, spent a year serving in the Jesuit Volunteer Corps.


Sharon Scott-Chandler
, for FINANCIAL EDUCATION AND ASSET BUILDING STRATEGIES FOR CHILDREN AND FAMILIES IN HEAD START, Monday, 3:30-5:00 pm, East, 4th level.
Sharon Scott-Chandler is executive vice president for Action for Boston Community Development (ABCD), playing a key role in overseeing ABCD’s wide array of human services programs. A vital member of the ABCD leadership staff since 1999, she served as Vice President, ABCD Head Start and Children’s Services, since 2003. In 2007, Governor Deval Patrick named Scott-Chandler Chair of the Board of the Massachusetts Early Education & Care Department. Prior to joining ABCD, Scott-Chandler served as an Assistant Attorney General for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
